Sunny Deol - A legacy forgotten - Part 1

Have a look at these questions

Where is Sunny Deol these days?
Why is he not at par with Khans, Kumars, & Kapoors these days?
Why are his movies not working?

Well, these are some questions which are troubling Sunny Deol's fans like me. He has won 2 national awards, has been king of box-office in 80s & 90s, and his legacy completes 30 years in Indian Cinema this year. No matter how much you want to defend and re-ignite his stardom, the fact is that Sunny Deol is struggling these days. He has been almost silent for last decade or so, and this generation doesn't even know what Sunny Deol is and what he used to be. And there are many knowledgeable folks who feels that Sunny Deol is just an over-glorified action hero with no real acting skills. He has good loyal fans also who believe in him, but he needs to give them a reason to back him and defend his stardom when questioned.

However, let me make an attempt to explain why he needs to be defended and given a chance again. I'll try to answer a few frequently asked questions about Sunny Deol. I am well aware that there are people who just doesn't get the appeal of Sunny Deol and think that he is a one-dimensional one-trick pony, just an action hero.

He is just a one-dimensional actor

One of the most frequently heard complaint about Sunny Deol is that he can only do action movies and he is not versatile. I am no expert in judging an actor's acting skill but this is simply a badly researched (or completely un-researched) opinion. He has done 85 movies so far, and not all of them are action movies. In fact, he started as a romantic hero in Betaab (1983). Following are the list of his movies along with its genre.

You are so right. Sunny has earned his die hard fans. Unfortunately he also has fans who trip on his later jingoistic screamy hammy performances in ridiculous films. But for me he remains an underrated actor who can speak volumes without dialogue... whose body language and sheer emotional grasp of his character are modern and very few actors in the Mumbai film industry can do what he did in well written roles.... in well directed movies.
